———————

Can we really know with certainty that we have eternal life?  What does the Bible say?  Below, read an understanding of this Eternally important subject by Cal Staggers based entirely on Biblical text.

  1. Let’s get started by reading I JOHN 5: 13 –

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.”

  1.  CAN WE KNOW FOR SURE THAT WE HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?

This passage says Yes.  Many people think that it is NOT possible to know for sure that they have eternal life … or that they can’t know until they die.  Many people think that it’s arrogant for someone to say that they know they have eternal life.  This verse says that thinking is wrong.

  1. WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF THIS LETTER?

…John, who was one of Jesus’ original 12 disciples.

  1. IS IT DIFFICULT OR EASY TO KNOW HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE?

TO ANSWER THAT, LET’S READ WHAT JESUS SAYS AT MATTHEW 18:2-3

“And He (Jesus) called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

  1. WE SEE THAT JESUS IS REFERRING TO A CHILD BELIEVING, SO…

It must be simple enough that a child can understand it.  You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to understand how to have eternal life.

  1. WE SAW IN I JOHN THAT THE AUTHOR, JESUS’ DISCIPLE JOHN, SAYS THAT HE KNOWS HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE — SO LET’S LOOK AT THE GOSPEL THAT HE WROTE, THE GOSPEL OF JOHN, TO SEE IF WE CAN FIND OUT HOW HE KNEW.
  1. CHAPTER 2 OF JOHN BEGINS WITH JESUS TURNING WATER INTO WINE.

PLEASE READ VERSE 11

“This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.”

  1. NEAR THE END OF JOHN’S GOSPEL, IN CHAPTER 20, JOHN DESCRIBES THE LAST MIRACULOUS SIGN THAT JESUS PERFORMED: HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD.

LET’S READ WHAT JOHN WROTE IMMEDIATELY AFTER DESCRIBING JESUS’ LAST RECORDED MIRACLE – VERSES 30 & 31

Many other signs therefore Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”

  1. HERE WE SEE THAT JOHN BEGINS HIS BOOK WITH JESUS’ FIRST MIRACLE AND CONTINUES WRITING OF HIS MIRACLES UP TO JESUS’ RESURRECTION.  THEN JOHN GIVES US THE THEME OF HIS GOSPEL, WHICH IS TO TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THESE MIRACLES SO THAT THEY MIGHT BELIEVE IN JESUS FOR THEIR ETERNAL LIFE.  THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK IN THE BIBLE THAT SAYS IT IS WRITTEN FOR THIS PURPOSE.

30.  SINCE JOHN SAYS THE PURPOSE OF HIS GOSPEL IS TO TELL PEOPLE HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, LET’S LOOK INSIDE IT TO FIND OUT HOW.  THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE IS SO POPULAR, THAT IT MAY BE HARD TO NOT GLAZE OVER, BUT LET’S TRY.

LET’S READ JOHN 3:14-18

14 “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.  He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

31.  A WORD IN THIS PASSAGE IS REPEATED 5 TIMES, WHICH MEANS IT MUST BE IMPORTANT.  WHAT IS THAT WORD?

“Believe”

32.  WHAT DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY A PERSON MUST DO TO GAIN ETERNAL LIFE?

“Believe”

33. THIS PASSAGE SAYS THAT ALL PEOPLE EITHER HAVE ETERNAL LIFE OR ARE CONDEMNED.  WHY IS SOMEONE CONDEMNED?

“Not believing”

  1. MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT GOOD PEOPLE GO TO HEAVEN AND BAD PEOPLE GO TO HELL.   DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY THAT?

No

  1. MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT A PERSON MUST REPENT OF THEIR SINS TO GO TO HEAVEN.  DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY THAT?

No.

  1. HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE WORD “REPENT” OR “REPENTANCE” SHOWS UP IN ALL OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN?

Zero

  1. HOW MANY TIMES DOES THE WORD “BELIEVE” SHOWS UP IN ALL OF JOHN?

Ninety Nine

  1. WE SEE THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL OF JOHN IS TO TELL PEOPLE HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE.   SO IF REPENTENCE IS REQUIRED, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THIS BOOK.

39. WHY CAN GOD OFFER ETERNAL LIFE TO SO-CALLED BAD PEOPLE AS WELL AS TO  GOOD PEOPLE?

We see that God gave up His only Son, Jesus, to be lifted up and die on the cross.  When that happened, Jesus paid the price for our sins so He would be able to give us eternal life.  As we saw earlier, He gets to make the rules and He loves us so much that He took our death so that He could give us His life.

  1. A GREAT SUMMARY OF THIS PASSAGE IS FOUND AT JOHN 6:47 WHEN JESUS SAYS:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.”

41.  WHAT IS THE CONDITION FOR GAINING ETERNAL LIFE?

“Believe”

  1. WHEN DOES THIS PASSAGE SAY THAT WE GAIN OUR ETERNAL LIFE?

DO WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WE DIE TO GET IT?

We don’t have to wait until we die to receive our gift of eternal life – “has” is present tense, we gain eternal life the moment we believe Jesus for it, we don’t have to wait until we die.

43. CAN WE LOSE ETERNAL LIFE?

No – if we could lose it, it would have the wrong name, it wouldn’t be eternal.

44.  IN JOHN 11:26, JESUS ASKS MARY AND ALL OF US:  DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?

WHAT IS YOUR ANSWER?

45.  IF SOMEONE LATER CHANGES THEIR MIND ABOUT JESUS, AND DOUBTS IF HE REALLY IS WHO HE SAYS HE IS – OR DOUBTS IF HE CAN REALLY GIVE US ETERNAL LIFE, DO THEY LOSE THEIR ETERNAL LIFE?

John 6:47 says No

  1.  LET’S READ AN EXAMPLE OF SOMEONE WHO DID THIS.

PLEASE READ LUKE 7: 19

“And summoning two of his disciples, John (the Baptist) sent them to the Lord, saying, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?”’

THIS IS SPEAKING OF JOHN THE BAPTIST (NOT JOHN THE DISCIPLE).  JOHN THE BAPTIST HAD BELIEVED IN JESUS FOR ETERNAL LIFE, BAPTIZED JESUS AND HAD TOLD OTHERS TO BELIEVE IN HIM.  NOW WE READ THAT HE HAD DOUBTS ABOUT JESUS.  DID HE LOSE HIS ETERNAL LIFE?  JOHN 6:47 INDICATES HE DID NOT.

47.  LET’S SEE WHAT JESUS SAYS IMMEDIATELY AFTER JOHN THE BAPTIST DOUBTED HIM

LUKE 7:28

“I say to you, among those born of women, there is no one greater than John…”

In this passage, which is immediately after John the Baptist doubted Jesus, Jesus says that not only did John the Baptist not lose his eternal life, He still considers John to be great.

48.  SHOULD THIS VERSE ENCOURAGE SOMEONE WHO’S ASHAMED FOR DOUBTING JESUS OR HIS PROMISE OF THE FREE GIVE OF ETERNAL LIFE?

Yes!

  1.  THERE ARE MANY TRADITIONS IN THE U.S. AND AROUND THE WORLD THAT OPPOSE THE BIBLE’S MESSAGE THAT ETERNAL LIFE IS A FREE GIFT.  MANY TRADITIONS TEACH THAT GOOD PEOPLE GO TO HEAVEN AND BAD PEOPLE GO TO HELL.  DOES THIS SURPRISE JESUS?

Let’s read Jesus words in Matthew 7: 13 & 14:

“Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it.  For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.”

Jesus predicted that out of mankind, it is a minority who will believe His message.

  1. IS THIS WHAT GOD WANTS?

No.  We read at I Timothy 4-5 that “…God our Savior…desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
